Uprooting your family and moving to an entirely new area of the country can be stressful. But for many of my clients, such moves have turned out quite well. They've found lovely homes in nice neighborhoods, made new friends, and completely redecorated and reorganized their home lives for the better.

The key to a positive experience? Choose your professionals well.

When it comes to Realtors, obviously you want someone competent, honest and service-oriented... but you also want a strategic thinker, someone you feel good about, someone who has good rapport with all the decision makers in the deal. This is crucial.

You Have Power of Choice

Relocation companies won't volunteer this, but you can specify your buyer's agent. If you strike up a relationship with a professional you really like and decide you prefer to work with them, you can insist that the relo company refer your move to this individual. Many of my clients have done this.

Don't forget... the relocation company works for your employer, who wants you, the employee, to be happy and productive after a stressful move. You can insist on working with someone of your choosing. Or you can go with whomever they assign. It's up to you.

Get the Best Deal

When you move to a new location, getting a good deal is important, especially if won't be living there for very long. You do not want to be upside down should you transfer again.

So buy smart. Pick a good Realtor who can help identify areas that meet your family's needs, but also offer the potential for better appreciation. Your home is an investment. Work with a strategic thinker who is creative about getting you the best property for the best possible price.
